food. sustainability. life

This is more of a life/personal post (or an attempt to justify why I haven’t been blogging - you decide which!)

Life is pretty crazy about plans. Life doesn’t really seem to care about plans at all. Which is strange, since we humans seem to REALLY like to plan. I’m stubbornly finding the same thing in my garden. It’s totally different than the way I planned it; stuff got pulled out that shouldn’t have, other things unexpectedly and whimsically took root. The heirloom tomato seedlings just never took off. The beets went crazy. The lettuce seemingly died, then magically was revived. So it goes.

Enter LIFE. Exit PLANS. And so to explain my lack of posting, I will say that I got smacked upside the head when LIFE entered and my PLANS left. When I came down from the initial emotion involved and found some clarity, I realized that my plans had ran away with me. Stepping back I found it easier to see that certain plans fit less and less into the life that I morphed into. Other things have entered and priorities have shifted, goals migrated.

So here’s to planning not to plan- to keeping eyes and ears and heart open to new ideas. Ready to pounce on opportunities when they arise, and walk away from doors that have somehow closed themselves.

Oh- and do read this fascinating article on how humans aren’t so good at planning and pursing happiness anyway. Our ability to accurately judge how we’re going to feel about a particular circumstance, person, or major life change is pretty skewed! So give yourself some needed slack!
